Sight and Insight: Iyrit's Birthday

Parshat Pinhas, read this week in celebration of our dear daughter Iyrit’s 60th birthday.

May she enjoy many years of health and happiness together with her husband Yehiel in the Land of Israel.

With Pride and Love, Mom and Dad

"God said to Moses, "Go up to this mountain of Avarim and SEE the Land that I have given to the Children of Israel. You shall SEE it." (Numbers 27: 12)

Why is "see" repeated twice?  At first glance, Moses saw the Dead Sea and desert. Then, he saw the future of his people in their land.

Rabbi Haim ben Attar explained that Moses gained a deeper vision and grasp of the inner spiritual essence of life in the Land of Israel. (Or Hahaim)

Moses could see children playing in the Land of Israel.

“And the streets of the city will be filled with boys and girls playing.” (Zekhariah 8: 5)

In the photos in this blog post, Iyrit’s grandchildren Eliad and Tehila are seen realizing Zekhariah’s vision.

It is her hope that her youngest grandchild Ariel will soon return to playing in Israel’s streets.

Rabbi Haim ben Attar was born in Morocco in 1698. Two years later, the Baal Shem Tov was born in Poland.

It is told that if these two giants of the Jewish people had met each other, the Moshiah would have come.

They both taught that through sanctifying everyday life, we sanctifying God.

Iyrit played in the streets of Israel when she was nine to 13 years old when we went back to the States.

She had the courage, determination, and Zionist zeal to return to Israel by herself when she was 16.

Iyrit was the first granddaughter born to her grandparents Jeanne and Abraham Alexenberg and Anna and Leo Benjamin.

She created a Jewish home in Israel filled with her love for her children.

Iyrit’s world is colored by her smiles and joy in connecting the Jewish people in the Land of Israel by bringing together the worlds of Rabbi Haim ben Attar and the Baal Shem Tov.

Her children’s ancestors were born in Morocco and Poland.
